It’s always fun designing a new structure in a strict historic style. Good historic design isn’t about copying a single house; it’s about understanding the language of the period. This new duplex borrows from Folk Victorian patterns so that, once built, it will feel as though it’s always been there.

A few carefully considered changes—refined porch proportions, classical moldings, a custom Chippendale balustrade, and an enlarged cupola—were all it took to elevate this midcentury home into a more timeless, classical expression.

This is my favorite type of project to design: one in which some relatively simple changes can provide great functional AND aesthetic benefits. In this renovation, second floor space will be added to create two cozy bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The exterior elevates the design of the house with charming details worthy of the early 20th century neighborhood.
